Money Matters - Financial Trusteeship

Overview: The Money Matters program supports adults (18+) with financial management, focusing on housing stability and homelessness prevention. Through harm reduction and financial literacy, participants build skills for independent banking and long-term financial security. The program is primarily for City of Toronto clients referred through Streets to Homes, with limited spots available for PARC members.

Program Focus:

  • Voluntary trustee banking support
  •  Budgeting and money management assistance
  •  Harm-reduction-based financial supports
  • Income management and planning
  • Eviction prevention
  • Ongoing financial coaching and follow-up

Trustees can:

  • Communicate with landlords regarding rent or arrears
  • Help create sustainable budgets
  • Ensure rent and essential bills are prioritized
  • Build confidence and skills for independent banking

Voluntary Trustee Banking Program

The Money Matters program is designed to help individuals who need assistance with financial management, with a specific focus on promoting housing stability. The program aims to prevent homelessness by enhancing clients’ financial literacy, providing harm reduction strategies, and ultimately guiding them toward independent banking.
Some spots are reserved for city clients who have gone through the referral process via Streets to Homes, while others are reserved for internal PARC clients.

Financial Literacy Training

The Money Matters staff provide financial literacy training for our members, with the goal of preventing homelessness through eviction prevention. All participants in the Money Matters program are eligible for this training.

Training Topics:

  • Understanding income and expenses
  • Learning to manage monthly bills
  • Developing budgeting skills
  • Preventing rent arrears and evictions

How It Works: Participants work with a trustee who provides guidance while respecting autonomy.

Who It Helps: Individuals (18+) at risk of losing housing due to financial challenges, homelessness or housing instability and people who want to improve financial literacy and
stability

Catchment Area: Services are available to people living in the area bordered by Bloor Street, Yonge Street, and the Lakeshore and Parkside Drive.

City of Toronto Service Specific Supports – focused on housing stabilization for individuals already living in units, particularly those struggling with rent arrears or at risk of eviction. Referrals come through the City of Toronto.
