Where we started
From its humble beginnings – a stove and a couple of volunteers – PARC has always been about people gathering for a healthy meal.
Where we’re at
Today, PARC’s Drop-in Centre is a place where healthy meals do much more than fill mouths: they start relationships that build trust, fight poverty and mental health & addictions stigma.
We are privileged to have a kitchen crew made up of committed volunteers, crew leaders, maintenance workers, and our chef, Tessa White. In fact, many people employed on our crew first came to PARC by walking through our front doors and becoming a member.
PARC’s Community Meal Program is dedicated to serving nutritious, dignified food, 365 days a year. We are focused on reversing the injustices of poverty and increasing food security. This refers to an individual’s ability to access to sufficient, safe, and healthy food.
Over the past few years, PARC’s kitchen has benefitted from some significant infrastructure upgrades such as a six-burner commercial range from Garland; new aluminum prep counters and a commercial dishwasher; and most recently new compressors for our walk-in fridge and freezer upgraded with support from the Community Action Fund at Daily Bread Food Bank.
In 2014, we served 67,833 meals to our community – free of charge, with full table service, and no I.D. required.
And we couldn’t have done it without your support: our incredible community partners like Second Harvest, Daily Bread Food Bank, and FoodShare, our generous local biz champions like Boulevard Club, Tucows, and RBC Foundation and the many caring friends of PARC who give year round and especially during the holidays.
Where we’re headed
In the months and years to come, we’ll continue to do what we do best – providing our members with access to healthy and nutritious food – so our members can continue the important work of growing a community where people rebuild their lives.
While grateful for all the support we receive, we must still recognize the tremendous challenges faced by running a program whose annual budget relies on 90% donated food. This is why we are being strategic about growing our annual budget one supporter at a time.
More support means more purchasing power to make key improvements like putting protein in every meal or purchasing from local producers and local growers when foods are in season.
