Overview

Peer Support Programs

Peer Support Programs employ individuals with lived experience to support people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Peers provide direct support in shelters and at PARC, connecting clients to services, supporting housing stability, and facilitating workshops and education sessions. Peers build connection, trust, and community, helping improve well-being and progress toward stabilization.

Peer Shelter Program

Overview: The program supports people experiencing homelessness by connecting them to services and helping them move toward stable housing. Peer workers with lived experience provide guidance, mentorship, and hands-on support in eight shelters across the city. Peers act as a bridge between residents and service providers. The program also provides meaningful work experience and supports peers in transitioning into roles in the social services sector.

Who it helps: People experiencing homelessness in shelters are supported by peer workers with lived experience who provide guidance, service navigation, programming, and connection to reduce isolation. It also supports people with lived experience of homelessness, mental health, and substance use through employment, training, and pathways into the social services sector.

How to access it: To connect with a peer worker, please speak to shelter staff at any of these locations: Scarborough Village Residence, Progress Place, Junction Place, YouthLink, Friends of Ruby, YWCA, Islington Seniors (Salvation Army) and Fatima House

Community Access Program

Overview: The Community Access Program is a partnership between PARC, Sistering and West Neighbourhood House that provides accompaniment to appointments and helps people living
in shelters to access appropriate care, improve continuity of support, and reduce emergency
room visits.

Who it helps: Individuals (18+) living in shelters who need assistance accessing healthcare and other essential services. It is particularly helpful for those who face barriers navigating systems on their own, including challenges related to mental health, substance use, or complex health needs.

How to access it: Connect with a program coordinator to access a referral form and confirm eligibility
