Our Vision for Housing

Discover how PARC is reshaping the Parkdale community by providing safe, affordable homes and essential support services to those in need.

Housing is a human right.

In the last 20 years, PARC has had the opportunity to acquire and secure affordable homes in Parkdale for our community. Our mission remains to provide a home and the right tools for our tenants to live independently and safely.

Acquisition is the fastest way to get new units into the system given the time it takes (an average of three to five years) to build new housing units. PARC continues to see acquisition as a solution to the ongoing housing crisis in our neighbourhood and has acquired 6 properties since we first started providing supportive housing in 2000.

Once properties are secured, there is significant work required to ensure they are safe, adequate and well-maintained. This is our priority as we navigate many challenges including decades of significant infrastructure repairs and upgrades to plumbing, wiring, and changes in the building and fire codes required to make them safe and comfortable for tenants.

PARC uses a Housing First approach as mandated by our funders and reflects a belief of recovery for tenants as it provides immediate access to rent supplements and mental health support services to people who are homeless and have a mental illness.

Why Supportive Housing Matters

Supportive housing pairs a stable home with the services people need to rebuild their lives.

For those experiencing long-term homelessness, housing instability, health challenges, and systemic barriers, supportive housing is the chance to heal, recover and connect to services they need to stabilize and rebuild their lives.

Supportive Housing provides reliable access to supports.

With a safe home and access to supports, people can focus on their health, build social connections, and take part in community life. Studies show that supportive housing is effective at stabilization, with most residents staying housed long-term

Supportive Housing is cost-effective.

Supportive Housing is proven to reduce reliance on emergency services, hospitals, shelters, and the justice system, while creating permanent homes for people who need them most. It also improves safety for communities, as residents with complex needs gain regular access to health and social services instead of crisis interventions.

Supportive Housing is a proven strategy to end homelessness.

Ending homelessness means we need more housing that is purpose built, well designed and provides robust supports. This requires collaboration between governments, service providers, and communities. Every supportive home built means one more person has a chance to improve their health and wellbeing, live safely and be more connected to the community
